Social Security checks are going paperless starting Tuesday, Sept. 30.

Because of an executive order issued in March 2025, federal benefit payments will primarily be issued electronically, with paper checks being phased out in most cases.

The White House says the federal government's use of paper-based payments, like checks and money orders, "imposes unnecessary costs; delays; and risks of fraud, lost payments, theft, and inefficiencies."

The Social Security Administration, in the weeks leading up to the change, has reached out to recipients who receive paper checks, encouraging them to switch to electronic payment options before the deadline.

"Electronic payments offer significant advantages over paper checks, including faster access to funds, increased security, and greater convenience," Nick Perrine, chief communications officer, said in a statement. "Payments are deposited directly into a bank account or onto a prepaid debit card, eliminating the need to wait for mail delivery or visit a bank."

Here's what to know about the change, and how you can go to from paper to digital.

Social Security no longer offering a 'temporary check option'

In addition to the change, the agency will no longer offer a "temporary check option" when processing initial claims.

Beneficiaries interested in requesting an exemption from the electronic payment requirement must file a waiver with the U.S. Treasury by calling 1-877-874-6347. SSA technicians are available to assist beneficiaries with this transition and to answer any questions.

According to the SSA, to ensure new beneficiaries receive their benefits securely and without interruption, those preparing initial claims should set up up bank accounts for direct deposit.

How to get Social Security payments electronically

In the wake of the transition, the Social Security Administration offers beneficiaries, whether "Old-Age, Survivors, and those with Disability Insurance (OASDI)" a couple ways to receive federal payments electronically:

  • Direct deposit: Beneficiaries can use or sign up for a my Social Security online account to manage direct deposit information and access benefit details. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients and international beneficiaries can call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance.
  • Direct Express Card: A safe and convenient prepaid debit card option for those without a bank account. To enroll, call 1-800-333-1795 or visit www.usdirectexpress.com.
