Covid hospitalisations have jumped by 37 per cent in just a week to the highest level in nearly a year – fuelling concerns that we could be in the early stages of an Autumn wave.
The hospital admission rate in England rose to 2.73 people per 100,000 people in the week to Sunday 21 September, compared to 2.0 the previous week and their highest level since November 2024, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) .
This continues a trend that has seen hospitalisations rising steadily in recent weeks to almost three times the rate seen at the end of June. However, experts point out that levels are still well below the peaks seen in recent years – which saw hospitalisations reach 4.7 per 100,000 last July (more than twice the current rate) and 11.4 in January
