LOS ANGELES (KCAL/KCBS) - A California man has been charged with murder after authorities found his wife’s dismembered body in their apartment. Friends say the victim immigrated to the United States with a dream of becoming a defense attorney but ended up in an abusive relationship.

Jonathan Renteria, 25, is in custody on $4 million bail after being charged with murder by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. Authorities found his wife’s body, decomposed and dismembered, inside their Los Feliz apartment.

Renteria allegedly attempted suicide Sept. 11 in a Ventura County hotel room. While investigating, authorities say they found a handwritten note from Renteria that said he had killed his wife.

Prosecutors say the murder happened Sept. 4.
