RORY MCILROY'S wife broke down tears and walked off the course after vile US Ryder Cup fan abuse.

The European star was subjected to a wave of hate throughout his four-ball round with Shane Lowry on Saturday afternoon.

He was hit with chants of 'f*** you Rory' along with vitriolic insults about his family and personal life.

His wife, Erica Stoll, watched on in horror as the abuse got worse and worse throughout his impressive round of golf .

It is understood she was even hit by a drink thrown by a fan from the stands at Bethpage Black, New York.

Her husband could be seen consoling her on the 18th green at the end of the day.

And according to The 42 in Ireland , it was all too much for Erica, who was seen crying.
