A tropical depression near Cuba is expected to become the Atlantic Ocean's next named storm, but National Hurricane Center forecasters said Sunday morning that the chances of it hitting the U.S. have decreased.

Located about 300 miles northwest of Cuba as of 10 a.m. Sunday, Tropical Depression 9 was producing sustained winds of 35 mph and moving north at 7 mph. Though forecasters expect the system to bring tropical storm conditions to portions of the Bahamas and Florida's east coast early this week, they believe it will away from the U.S. in the coming days as it develops.

The NHC's latest track forecast shows the depression heading north and reaching tropical storm status by Monday, taking a sharp turn to the east-northeast by Tuesday and later taking aim for Bermuda as a hurricane.
