Shooting at Michigan Church Leaves One Dead, Nine Injured

A tragic shooting occurred at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, Michigan, during Sunday services, resulting in one death and nine injuries. The incident unfolded as the gunman opened fire inside the church before reportedly setting the building ablaze. Authorities confirmed that the shooter has been killed, and there is currently no threat to the public.

The church, located about 80 kilometres north of Detroit, was engulfed in flames following the attack. Emergency services, including firefighters and police, responded swiftly to the scene, with smoke billowing from the structure. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson stated, “The entire church is on fire. This is a dynamic scene,” and confirmed that the area had been evacuated.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow over the incident, stating, “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community.” The shooting took place shortly after the passing of Russell M. Nelson, the oldest president of the church, who died at the age of 101. Dallin H. Oaks is expected to be appointed as the next president.

The Grand Blanc Township Police Department reported that there are multiple victims and urged residents to avoid the area. The community, which has around 8,000 residents, is situated near residential neighborhoods and a Jehovah’s Witness church.

In response to the shooting, President Donald Trump condemned the violence, calling it “another targeted attack on Christians in the United States.” He urged the public to pray for the victims and their families, emphasizing the need to end the ongoing violence in the country. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with local and federal authorities involved in the response.
