Giants' Rafael Devers does the 'impossible,' plays 163 games in MLB season

It's technically possible, but only in a certain situation.

Normally, playing 163 games in an MLB regular season would be impossible. Teams only play 162 games.

But a trade is the simplest way to open the door.

That's what happened for Rafael Devers.

When he was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants , Boston had played one more game than San Francisco had.

So Devers got to play an extra game with the Giants relative to what the Red Sox had the rest of the way.

Couple that with Devers playing every game of the season, and it works out to 163 games played.

It's the 34th time in MLB history a player has done this, according to MLB Network's Sarah Langs .
