A quiet Sunday service in a Michigan Mormon church erupted into horror when a man drove his truck through the front doors, opened fire on worshippers, and set the building on fire, authorities said.

Police confirmed one person was killed and at least nine injured before the 40-year-old suspect was fatally shot in an exchange with officers. Federal investigators are helping comb through the charred building for more victims and evidence.

Witnesses described chaos as parishioners ran through smoke and flames. “We heard a big bang and the doors flew open and then everyone rushed out,” a survivor named Paula told local TV. “I can’t believe someone would do this to my church,”
