CHARLESTON, Maine (WABI) - Elroy Morgan of Charleston is no stranger to growing big pumpkins.
“It’s a lot of fun. People just love seeing a giant pumpkin. It puts a smile on anybody’s face,” said Morgan.
From heating the ground to preparing for frosts, growing pumpkins of such size is no easy feat.
“You’ve got to get your greenhouses up and soil cables in. A lot of water and plenty of sunshine, and good luck,” Morgan added
While he has irrigation set up, this summer’s drought still posed a challenge.
“I’ve had to shut my well off because I lost pressure a couple of times. So, I had to wait until it fills up and then pump more water back out in the garden,” Morgan explained.
Morgan plans to drop off one of his pumpkins in Bangor where it will sit in front of Chick-Fil-A and be part of
