**Search for Missing Boy in Alberta Enters Second Week** The search for a six-year-old boy missing in the Alberta wilderness has entered its second week, with officials stating the chance of survival is now less than five percent. Darius Macdougall was last seen on the morning of September 21, walking with family members near Island Lake Campground, approximately four kilometers south of Crowsnest Pass. He was reported missing around 11:30 a.m. after his family searched for him for about an hour.
During a media briefing on Sunday, RCMP Corporal Gina Slaney discussed the search's current status and the concerns regarding Darius's survivability. "At the point we are at with regards to the search, the survivability is less than five percent," Slaney said. She explained that this assessment was based on several factors, including the clothing he was wearing, his health, weather conditions, terrain, and statistical survival data.
Despite the grim outlook, Slaney emphasized that the search is ongoing and has not been scaled back. "Just because we’re saying survivability is limited right now does not mean we’re stopping looking for Darius. We will continue until we find him," she stated.
Search tactics are being adjusted due to the low probability of finding Darius alive. Adam Kennedy from Alberta Search and Rescue noted that both ground and aerial search methods are being modified. This includes a reduced reliance on infrared technology, as it is believed that it may not detect any heat signatures on the ground.
On Sunday, approximately 200 personnel were involved in the search, including around 100 search-and-rescue volunteers. Resources deployed in the effort include an RCMP helicopter, drones, and search dogs. Search teams have combed through seven square kilometers multiple times, with some searches extending to a ten-kilometer radius.
On Saturday, about 60 RCMP officers conducted a shoulder-to-shoulder search in the area where Darius was last seen. Slaney confirmed that there is no suspicion of foul play in the boy's disappearance, but all investigative avenues are being explored. "Any tip that comes in is being investigated fully," she said.
Darius is described as four feet tall with short brown hair. He was last seen wearing a blue and grey hoodie and sweatpants. Authorities are urging anyone who may have had contact with Darius to call the Crowsnest Pass RCMP at 403-562-2866.
