A man has been charged with murder following a fatal stabbing outside a quiet suburban shopping centre in Brisbane’s east.

Emergency services were called to Manly Heights Shopping Village at about 1am on Sunday, following reports a man in his 40s had been found with critical injuries.

He was stabbed a number of times in the chest and stomach, and he was declared dead at the scene after police arrived.

Detective Inspector Wayne Francis told reporters on Sunday afternoon the victim appeared to have suffered a "brutal and violent attack".

A 45-year-old man allegedly fled the scene on foot before grabbing an 18-year-old woman – not known to him – and attempted to sexually assault her on Miles Crescent about 2am.

A member of the public intervened and immediately called the police.
