Thousands of federal workers are bracing for layoffs after the White House threatened mass firings if an agreement isn’t reached to avoid a government shutdown.

The government will run out of money at midnight on Tuesday unless Democrats and Republicans agree on a funding bill. Although Democratic leaders are set to meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, the two sides are still far from a deal.

Government shutdowns often result in furloughs and missed paychecks, but the matter has been complicated further after the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) directed federal agencies to use the shutdown as an “opportunity” to reduce their workforce , specifically in those departments that are not legally required to continue operations.
