Children made crafts in a “kid zone” while a cloud of bubbles floated over the crowd as many attending a rally protesting the Trump administration’s plans to send troops to Portland recorded the moment on their phones, joking that it looked like the perfect portrait of a “war-ravaged” city as the president has called it.

“I would have loved to be with my little 3-year-old at the pumpkin patch like a bunch of other families,” said Reyna Lopez, executive director and president of the Oregon farmworker union PCUN – Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste. “But guess what?
