Police are currently responding to an incident in Melbourne's Bourke Street Mall after a pursuit through the central business district this afternoon. Victoria Police confirmed that several individuals have been arrested. A police spokesperson stated, "We will provide further information when it comes to hand but there have been no injuries during the incident and there is no threat to the community."
Aerial footage from the scene showed a white car stopped near the tram tracks in the shopping area, but it remains unclear whether this vehicle belongs to police or a civilian. Witnesses reported seeing a crowd gathered in the street as the situation unfolded.
One witness, who had just finished lunch at a restaurant on the corner of Bourke and Swanston Streets, described the scene. He recounted seeing a white BMW speeding through the mall. "Then as we turned the corner we noticed police cars were coming down as well," he said. "As we were approaching and got near the car we saw that police were coming [the other] way as well. They were coming from every direction."
In response to the incident, Yarra Trams announced that tram routes 86 and 96 are being diverted away from Bourke Street Mall due to an emergency services request. Authorities are expected to release more information as it becomes available, and the situation is ongoing.
