EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - There was a big, weekend-long, swim event, at Deaconess Aquatic center.

It was called the Evansville Winter Kickstarter, and it’s sanctioned by USA Swimming and Indiana Swimming.

Locally, it’s put on, by the Gold Medal Swim Academy, founded by Aaron Opell, an IU swim team grad and noted swim instructor.

Around ten teams competed, with ages ranging from 8 and under, all the way up to 19 years old. The event ran both days, this weekend. USA swimming is the grassroots program, and governing organization, for club swimming.

Opell certainly knows his swimming, as he is one of the rare people, to be named to the U.S. national team as both an athlete and a coach, as he helped coach both Olympic gold medalists Lilly King and Mikaela Jenkins!
