A Riverina abattoir has been hit with a $750,000 fine after a supervisor's foot was severed in a horrific incident involving an unguarded machine, with a judge condemning the company's subsequent treatment of the critically injured worker as "disgraceful" and "heartless in the extreme".

Hilltop Meats, of Young, was convicted and sentenced in the NSW District Court on September 17 after pleading guilty to a major breach of the Work Health and Safety Act . The breach led to supervisor Dean Spencer suffering a traumatic amputation of his left foot below the knee on October 20, 2021.
The court heard Mr Spencer was attempting to clear a routine blockage in a large screw conveyor, known as an auger, which was used to transport meat meal. He had climbe
