WAUSAU, Wis. – About one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. During Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) Week (September 28 – October 4), Aspirus Health is reminding women that understanding their personal risk is one of the most powerful tools for prevention and early detection.

“Being born female and getting older are the most common risk factors,” said Cecilia Stroede, MD, breast surgeon with Aspirus Health. “But there are many others we also need to think about, such as family history, having dense breast tissue, lifestyle habits, alcohol use, and certain genetic mutations.”
