Reading Kamala Harris’ new book on the 2024 campaign left me with a nagging question: Why did she write it?

Sure, it contains interesting nuggets from the campaign, such as acknowledging that Pete Buttigieg was her first choice for a running mate, that Donald Trump was actually pleasant to her in a phone conversation, that her campaign manager told her that “people hate Joe Biden,” and that she didn’t feel Biden’s camp trusted her loyalty.

But those are the sort of tidbits you’d expect from a campaign reporter who cashes in on their inside access by sharing on-the-trail anecdotes for those with an appetite for such things.

It is not the sort of tome that helps put her candidacy in historical context, given her place as the first serious presidential contender of Asian descent, let alone
