EVANSVILLE — The math on Evansville city elections just doesn't work for Vanderburgh County Clerk Dottie Thomas.

The office of the clerk, Vanderburgh County's chief elections officer, spent roughly $486,000 staging the 2023 mayoral and City Council elections, Thomas told the Courier & Press. Exactly 18,001 city residents voted in those elections.

The following year — the year presidential, statewide and congressional elections were held — more people than that voted straight-ticket Republican alone. In all, more than 74,000 Vanderburgh County residents voted.
