NORTHUMBERLAND — A loud explosion heard across the town of Northumberland and areas of the neighboring village of Schuylerville on Saturday night appears to have been the result of a metal drum that containing combustible material exploding during a bonfire.

The explosion occurred at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday, on Stark’s Knob Road. A preliminary investigation indicates that the presence of the drum was not known to the people hosting the bonfire, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office
