Guwahati : The investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s sudden death has taken a new turn, with the Assam government formally requesting the Centre to activate the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore. Stepping up the investigations, the Assam government wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs, asking it to use the MLAT with Singapore. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the step was needed to ensure that Indian investigators could work directly with their Singaporean counterparts.

Sarma explained that once the treaty is activated, it will allow investigators here to seek official help from Singaporean authorities, access reports, and, if it comes to that, extradite people from Singapore for questioning. “Once invoked, the MLAT will enable us to access vital case details
