Your money may look crisp and harmless, but it is one of the dirtiest things you touch every day. Think about it, each note in your wallet has travelled through countless hands, food stalls, buses, and shops before reaching you. Along the way, it collects invisible passengers: bacteria, viruses, and even chemical residues. A study published in PLOS ONE and highlighted by the University of Michigan revealed that U.S. dollar bills carried hundreds of microbial species, including skin bacteria, environmental microbes, and traces of pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli.
