SOUTH CONGAREE, S.C. — South Congaree Police Department has announced that Police Chief Steve Jonas has officially resigned.

The announcement was posted on the SCPD's Facebook page Friday, September 26, 2025 , and comes almost a month after Jonas was involved with another vehicle on South Beltline Boulevard in Columbia.

On August 27, South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the collision between a South Congaree police vehicle driven by Jonas, who was heading east on South Beltline, and a GMC Terrain that was headed west on South Beltline. Jonas' police vehicle crossed the center line, striking the GMC. The three people traveling in the GMC were taken to an area hospital due to injuries sustained in the collision.
