GREEN BAY, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day in history - September 29, 1957 - the Green Bay Packers held their first game at City Stadium, now known as Lambeau Field.
In that first game, they played none other than their biggest rivals, the Chicago Bears. The Packers took home the win, 21-17.
Then-Vice President Richard Nixon attended the game. He joined over 32,000 others, which was the capacity at the time. That’s just a fraction of the current capacity of over 81,000 people.
City Stadium was renamed Lambeau Field in 1965, in memory of Packers founder, player and long-time coach Earl ‘Curly’ Lambeau.
The venue has been home to the Packers for six of their 13 world championships. Lambeau Field was named a Wonder of Wisconsin on September 10, 2025.
