HAYS, Kan. (KAKE) - Neighbors who live along Downing Avenue in Hays say that the street is normally quiet and peaceful, a place where you let your kids play outside without a watchful eye. But on Saturday night, it was filled with the sound of gunshots and police sirens instead, after the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said a domestic violence incident led to the death of a Hays police officer.
Neighbor Ronda Ranker says it was shocking. "This is a nice neighborhood. Nothing like this has ever happened, and he was a nice guy," said Ranker.
