MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - This week, the National Guard and several federal agencies will arrive here in Memphis.
Starting Monday, the mission is to stop violent crime under the orders of the U.S. Government.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee says the Memphis Safe Task Force will consist of National Guard members , about 300 state troopers in the Memphis area, and a dozen more federal agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Federal agencies are going to provide specialized support for local law enforcement.
Elected leaders on both sides of the aisle say the Memphis Safe Task Force can complement the work the Memphis Police Department is already doing.
