A Washington, Iowa, teen died this weekend after being mistaken for a squirrel and shot in the head, according to a press release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Carson Ryan, 17, was hunting squirrels Saturday around 3 p.m. when another member of his hunting party mistook him for a squirrel and shot him in the back of the head.

He was taken to the University of Iowa, where he later died from his injuries, according to the release.

“The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, responded to the hunting incident in Washington County. The incident is currently under investigation,” the DNR release states.
