India has witnessed a significant decline in poverty between 2010-11 and 2022-23, with several States making remarkable progress, according to recent report published on the RBI Bulletin for September 2025, taking into account the 20 major States in India.

States such as Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana) now have the smallest proportion of their population below the poverty line.

Conversely, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have the highest incidence of poverty. Notably, some of the poorest States, such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, have recorded the sharpest declines in poverty over this period.
