The Pirates announced Monday that they’re extending the contract of manager Don Kelly.
Kelly, 45, has been the team’s manager since Derek Shelton was fired on May 8.
The Pirates went 59-65 in 124 games under Kelly, an improvement from the 12-26 mark under Shelton. When he was announced as Shelton’s replacement in May, general manager Ben Cherington called Kelly’s appointment “permanent for 2025” but did not use an “interim” title.
This move confirms Kelly’s appointment will be permanent for more than just this season. The length of the extension was not announced. The team will hold a press conference with Kelly at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
“Donnie has earned the respect of the players, front office, and our fans — and he has certainly earned mine,” Pirates owner Bob Nutting said in a release
