Contrary to popular belief, a high-sugar fruit could be the key to staving off diabetes, according to a groundbreaking study from the United States. The research, led by clinical nutrition expert Raedeh Basiri at George Mason's University and funded by the National Mango Board, found that mangoes , known for their high sugar content, might actually protect against diabetes rather than causing it.
The study involved 23 participants who were split into two groups; one group was given a fresh mango daily, while the other was given a low-sugar granola bar each day. Over a six-month period, the researchers monitored their blood sugar levels, insulin responses, and body fat.
