ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - From Williamson Road to Third Street, Roanoke Valley Metro helps thousands everyday get to where they need to go.
Dr. Laura Heartman is the founder of Bus Riders of Roanoke and advocates for those who use the bus system.
“Some of them are truly unsafe, mostly due to the proximity to traffic. Some of our bus stops are simply assigned by the side of the road,” Heartman said.
Bus stops like the one outside the Valley View Walmart, sit right on the curb.
There is a bench, a sign, but no lights or sidewalk.
“Over the last couple of years we have put up 20 new bus shelters.”
Kevin Price is the General Manager of the Greater Roanoke Transit Company that operates the Valley Metro Bus system.
He said they are working to address safety concerns among several other issues
