NEW YORK — The Yankees scored more runs and hit more home runs than anyone this season. Their starting pitching was excellent, too.

Against the Red Sox in this week’s Wild Card Series, they also would play every game at Yankee Stadium.

But the Red Sox did have one very obvious advantage: Their bullpen ERA was the second best in the majors, while the Yankees’ ranked 23rd.

That became the difference in Tuesday night’s game, a 3-1 Red Sox victory that has them up 1-0 in this best-of-three series.

Down two runs, the Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth inning against Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman, but Giancarlo Stanton struck out swinging, Jazz Chisholm flied out to shallow right field and Trent Grisham whiffed on a 101-mph, 2-2 fastball.

Red Sox win.
