Rio Tinto has notified the national market operator that it could close Queensland’s Gladstone Power Station by March 2029, six years sooner than previously expected.

The major mining company has formally notified the Australian Energy Market Operator it could bring forward the closure of the state’s largest coal-powered station.

In a statement, Rio Tinto said the notification ensured compliance with National Electricity Rules to provide three and a half years notice for the closure of electricity generators.

While the notice period can be extended at any time, Rio Tinto said the announcement had no immediate impact on GPS operations.
