Daniil Medvedev was caught in the crosshairs of the umpire at the China Open, but the ATP confirmed the Russian has no case to answer.

The former US Open champion retired from his semi-final with what looked like cramp while trailing 7-5 5-7 0-4 to American Learner Tien, who advanced to the final to play Jannik Sinner.

Medvedev, who had battled from two breaks down to edge the opening set, struggled physically before letting a 5-3 lead slip in the second. Advertisement

Tien fought back to force a decider and the Russian pulled the plug early in the third, sending the American through to his first ATP tour final.

But the major talking point was Medvedev's heated exchange with the umpire after receiving a code violation for failing to play a return in the third set.
