A federal judge denied the City of Boston’s motion to dismiss part of a lawsuit filed by four protesters who allege three Boston Police officers used unreasonable force against them during a George Floyd demonstration in May 2020.

U.S. District Court Judge Allison Burroughs ruled Monday that the lawsuit can proceed against the City of Boston and three Boston police officers.

The case against the city will continue based on claims against the city’s policymakers, per the court’s decision. The four plaintiffs filed the case in 2021, alleging that the city’s policies, customs, and practices in handling protests were the moving force behind the three officers’ “excessive force” using riot batons or pepper spray.
