SHELTON, CT (WFSB) - A new state law that aims to crack down on illegal street takeovers took effect on Wednesday.
Police said the legislation gives them more tools to deter and punish those involved in the dangerous events in which large groups of people block roads to perform stunts or race vehicles.
In a recent incident in Shelton , a teenager was struck by a vehicle in a parking lot.
The driver fled the scene and police were said to still be investigating.
Under the new law, people who organize or participate in street takeovers face increased fines.
Even spectators can be penalized.
Repeat offenders could face driver’s license suspensions of up to two years after a third offense.
The law also allows police to confiscate dirt bikes and ATVs used during takeovers.
