The federal government began shutting down numerous programs on Wednesday, Oct. 1, after the Senate failed to advance a continuing resolution that would have provided funding through Nov. 21.

President Donald Trump on Sept. 29 met with congressional leaders, but no deal was reached. Republican leaders claim they want to prevent undocumented immigrants from getting federal health care benefits and tighten requirements, while Democrat leaders insist on extending federal subsidies under Obamacare and reverse recent Medicaid cuts they say could affect health care for millions of Americans.

Without a congressional agreement and approval from Trump, all nonessential and non-mandated portions of the United States government are shutting down.
