Armwood remains the top overall team in the FHSAA power rankings, but very few of the state's South Florida powers are anywhere near the top of the list.

In fact, none of the five defending state champions from South Florida — West Boca (Class 6A), St. Thomas Aquinas (5A), American Heritage (4A), Miami Northwestern (3A) and Chaminade-Madonna (1A) — are ranked in the top 50 in the state.

Despite all five being ranked in the top 11 of the USA Today Florida Network Super 25, none of them would even be the top seed in their own region on the latest power rankings.

Strength of schedule appears to be the major issue for these teams, although Aquinas opened with the top-ranked team in the nation (Mater Dei, California), Chamiande-Madonna played the No. 3 ranked team (St. Frances, Maryland) and
