Les Roberts is a Professor Emeritus of Public Health at Columbia University. He formerly was the director of health policy at the International Rescue Committee, and was on Westhill’s 1979 Section III record-setting mile relay team (... a record that was broken repeatedly by Fowler the next year). He lives in Cortland County.

Today, Oct. 1, marks the first time in 64 years that there is officially no U.S. Agency for International Development as part of our government structure. This breaks my heart a little as the success of my lifetime involved getting our study of a war in Congo’s death toll on the front page of The New York Times , triggering just a couple of months later a twelvefold increase in USAID’s funding in Eastern DRC.
