The Labour Party is 'listening' to Andy Burnham with the Prime Minister now 'adopting' his policies, the mayor's team has said.

Greater Manchester's mayor has welcomed Sir Keir's comments about scrapping old university targets.

The Prime Minister said the Blair-era target for 50 per cent of young people to go to university is not 'right for our times'. In his speech at Labour Party conference on Tuesday (September 30), he announced it would be scrapped.

Instead, the government's new ambition is for two-thirds of children to either go to university or do a 'gold standard apprenticeship'. It follows similar criticisms from Mr Burnham who has called for alternatives to the university route .
