The federal government shut down in the early morning hours of Oct. 1 as lawmakers failed to reach an agreement over funding. All the while, mass layoffs are looming for some agencies.

During a government shutdown, "essential" government services like the U.S. Postal Service remain open and functional, while those deemed "non-essential," such as national parks, close or cut funding

And the 31,606 passengers who fly through Massachusetts airports each day could see delays due to the shutdown's staffing impacts, according to Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass.
