The New Jersey Devils have extended a core member of their future. Defenceman Luke Hughes has agreed to a seven-year extension worth $9 million a season. This works out to $63 million total, and the deal runs through the end of the 2031-32 season.

A seven-year, $63 million extension for Luke Hughes is what we call "the going rate" for a top-level defenseman which is what Hughes will very, very soon be. He's been forcibly thrown to the fire the past two years and handled it pretty well all things considered.

Luke Hughes Signs Extension

Hughes was drafted by the Devils in 2021. In three seasons with the Devils, Hughes has scored 17 goals in 155 games. Last season, Hughes recorded 44 points in 71 regular-season games.
