Phenomenal finishes and spectacular special teams play so far
Through the first five weeks of the NFL season, we have already seen some exceptional finishes. There have been 18 games to feature a game-winning score in the final three minutes of regulation or in overtime. That is the most in 42 years. The special teams play, along with the newly tweaked dynamic kickoff, has been a big hit as well. We have seen 11 special teams touchdowns so far this season, which is the most at this point in 13 years. Last week also saw the most kickoff return yards in a single week ever in the NFL, with 3,624.
International Games consecutively for the first time for NFL teams
This Sunday marks the beginning of three consecutive weeks featuring an international game in the United Kingdom. The Vikings, after appearing in the first regular-season game in Ireland against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, are the first team to play consecutive international games in different cities. Week 6 will feature the Denver Broncos against the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and in Week 7, the Los Angeles Rams will face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium.
The Bills and Eagles are the lone undefeated teams left in the NFL
The Philadelphia Eagles are 4-0 for the third time in the last four seasons. The Buffalo Bills are 4-0 for the first time since 2020. The Eagles can become the first team to start 5-0 three times in a four-year span since the Indianapolis Colts achieved the feat in 2006-07 and 2009. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni can become only the second coach in NFL history to lead his team to 5-0 in three of his first five seasons coaching, joining only Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Brown. Jalen Hurts is the first quarterback in NFL history with 5 touchdown passes, 4 rushing touchdowns, and no interceptions in his team's first four games of a season.
Four of nine teams with 3-1 records will play each other in Week 5
The San Francisco 49ers (3-1) will play the Los Angeles Rams (3-1) on Thursday Night Football. Niners running back Christian McCaffrey ranks third in the NFL with 31 receptions and 530 scrimmage yards (305 receiving, 225 rushing), becoming the third player since 1990 with at least 300 receiving yards and 200 rushing yards in his team's first four games of the season. Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua leads the NFL in receptions with 42, which ties him for the most receptions by a player within their team's first four games. He shares the accomplishment with Cooper Kupp in 2022 and Michael Thomas in 2018.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1) will play the Seattle Seahawks (3-1) in the late afternoon game on Sunday. Both teams will celebrate their 50th season by each wearing throwback uniforms. Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield has quietly led the NFL in touchdown passes since the 2023 season with 77. He is also second in the league since 2023 in passing yards with 9,448.
In the past 20 seasons (2005-24), only four players have had a touchdown catch in four of their first five career games. Bucs rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka leads all rookies with 282 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns.
The Seahawks lead the NFC in scoring defense (16.8 points per game allowed) and have recorded seven interceptions this season, tied for the second-most in the NFL.
