CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A routine license checkpoint turned into a multi-county chase Tuesday night when a driver tried to run from North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers, reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph before stop sticks disabled his vehicle.

Vaughn Paul Mitchell III, 34, of Claremont, approached a checkpoint on North Carolina Highway 16 near Shell Hollar Road at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sept. 30. Troopers asked Mitchell to pull to the shoulder because he did not have identification, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Mitchell did not comply, initiating a vehicle chase in his 2015 Chevrolet Malibu.

The pursuit continued for several miles into Alexander County before Mitchell turned onto U.S. 64 and traveled into Iredell County. He then turned onto Interstate 40 westbound to
