BMW has recalled over 145,000 vehicles due to a starter motor issue that could lead to fires.
The car manufacturer announced the recall on Thursday, Sept. 25, on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, noting that altogether, 145,102 vehicles have been recalled. The models impacted are the 340I, X6, 840I, 740LI, X7 and X5 vehicles.
According to BMW, the vehicle's engine starter may not start the vehicle properly, causing the engine to overheat. If the starter overheats, part of the engine’s protection material could catch on fire.
"If this occurs, occupants may see or smell smoke while driving or when leaving their vehicle," according to the recall announcement.
BMW said it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.
Which vehicles were recalled?
Most of the recalled vehicles are 2019 to 2020 BMW X5s, the luxury car manufacturer said in the announcement.
Here's the full list of vehicles:
- 2019 to 2020 BMW X5 – 82,153 vehicles
- 2019 to 2020 BMW X7 – 24,979 vehicles
- 2020 to 2025 BMW 840I – 12,456 vehicles
- 2020 to 2022 BMW 740LI – 11,893 vehicles
- 2020 BMW 340I – 10,867 vehicles
- 2020 BMW X6 – 2,754 vehicles
The recall includes vehicles repaired under an August 2024 recall, 24V576. BMW said at the time that the starter motor would overheat and ignite nearby materials in the engine compartment, increasing the risk of a fire.
The company sent owner notification letters for the previous recall on Sept. 27, 2024, and updated vehicle software for free. Drivers impacted by that recall will need to have their vehicles repaired again, BMW said.
What is BMW doing to fix this?
According to BMW, dealers will replace the engine starter for free with a starter that has a different design. Drivers who previously had their vehicles fixed for the issue and paid out of pocket may be able to get reimbursed, BMW said.
The company said it notified dealers about the issue on Sept. 25, and BMW will mail letters to drivers about the fix on Nov. 17. Customers will also be able to search for their vehicle identification numbers on NHTSA.gov on Nov. 17.
The NHTSA's recall number for this issue is 25V644.
