Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, Dr Gitanjali J. Angmo, has written to President Droupadi Murmu, urging for the unconditional release of her husband, a climate activist detained under the National Security Act (NSA). Wangchuk was arrested following violent protests in Leh demanding statehood for Ladakh, which resulted in four deaths and numerous detentions. In her letter, Gitanjali described her husband as a peaceful advocate for climate action and the development of tribal communities, stating, "He can never be a threat to anyone, let alone his nation."

Gitanjali accused authorities of conducting a "witch hunt" against Wangchuk, claiming that this campaign has been ongoing for four years. She questioned whether it is a crime to advocate for climate change, educational reforms, and the upliftment of tribal areas in a peaceful manner. She emphasized that these actions should not be seen as threats to national security.

In her appeal, Gitanjali highlighted her husband's dedication to the people of Ladakh and his support for the Indian Army. She also noted that she has not been able to speak to him since his detention on September 26, expressing her shock and concern for his well-being. Gitanjali mentioned that she has been placed under surveillance by the CRPF and that an FIR has been filed against her institute, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL).

The protests in Leh were sparked by demands for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which provides for the administration of tribal areas. The situation remains tense, with local groups refusing to engage in talks with the central government until Wangchuk is released. The Union Home Ministry has expressed readiness to discuss Ladakh-related issues but faces resistance from local leaders who demand a judicial inquiry into the recent violence and the release of all detained individuals.

As the unrest continues, the Leh district has seen temporary relaxations in curfew restrictions, allowing residents to access essential services amid ongoing tensions.
