Marcus Jones has been named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after making history against the Carolina Panthers.

The all-purpose New England Patriots cornerback returned three punts last Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Those returns became 167 yards — a single-game franchise record — as well as a visit to the end zone with his side down 6-0 in the first quarter.

Veteran punter Sam Martin’s initial launch of the afternoon did not give way to a fair catch. The 5-foot-8, 188-pound Jones fielded it at the 13-yard line instead, weaving in and out of troubling seas for an 87-yard touchdown.

Much to the surprise of the Panthers. The escape started a surge of 42 unanswered points for the Patriots.
