DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Special Olympics Ohio will not hold its state-level gymnastics competition for the next two years.

According to Special Olympics Ohio, this change was made because there were only 44 total athletes in gymnastics for the 2025 State Summer Games. Compared to the 988 athletes in track and field, 541 athletes in bowling and 280 athletes in bocce.

Special Olympics Ohio said it warned the local programs that gymnastics could be moved from a state-level sport back to a local/regional level because of a lack of participation in 2024, stressing it is the only sport small enough to automatically go to state.

Director of Marketing and Communications Chad Highland said this change will be reassessed in two years.
