The federal government shut down after midnight Wednesday as Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Senate failed to come to terms on budget negotiations, with both sides blaming each other.

Amid the shutdown, roughly 750,000 federal employees are expected to be furloughed, though it's unclear how many will be impacted in Minnesota. Workers whose jobs are deemed essential could also go without a paycheck until funding is restored but still be told to come to work.

About 20,000 federal workers live in Minnesota, or 35,000 when taking into account the state's contractors, postal workers, and military personnel, including 13,000 Minnesota National Guard members.
