Coleus is one of our favorite annuals for shady spots . You can plant it in the garden or yard as ground cover, or in containers as part of a thriller, filler, spiller strategy. Like a psychedelic mint, this fast-growing, wildly variegated plant comes in so many striking color combinations that it's hard to find a shady spot where it doesn't look great.
Perhaps the only real downside to coleus is that, as with all annuals, it dies back as soon as the frost hits , requiring you to buy more cuttings or seeds, and replant it the following spring.
